Biography

Abigail (Kimball) Severans immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Abigail, daughter of Richard and Ursula (Scott) Kimball, was christened in Rattlesden, Suffolk, England in 1617 [1]; She married John Severans before 1637 in Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America, probably in Boston [2]; She died in Salisbury on 17 June 1658 (N.S.) [3]

Abigail's birth record is a secondary source, a primary source christening record in Suffolk, England is needed. The 'Colonial Families' doucument cited above also indicates she married John Severans in England in 1635. Other documents indicate her parents and siblings emigrated to New England in 1635 and John and Abigail followed in 1637.

Abigail died at the birth of her twin daughters, one unnamed, lived ten days, Elizabeth the second twin daughter died at age four.

To son Thomas Skott five pounds within one year after my decease. To Mr. Peter Devereux, minister of Rattlesden, ten shillings. Wife Martha to be executrix.

Research Notes

  • Abigail's 1617 birth/christening is lacking an England vital record
  • son Adam is not sourced and is not listed in documentation herein. His birth is entered as same as daughter Elizabeth (were they twins)?
  • in the childlist above the penultimate child was a daughter but gives conflicting 1658 birth dates.

According to the Massachusetts, U.S., Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 at ancestry.com Abigail died 19 Jun 1648. Any thoughts about the difference between the 1648 date and the date of 1658 that is listed above? Thank you.

My only thought is that records were written down by hand and not by typewriter or something else more modern. I have run across many discrepancies where a 4 looked like a nine (or perhaps even a 5) and vice-versa. My records come from some 19th century volumes, but that doesn't make them right. Wikitree's records do say "about" 1658. But they say both Abigail and John Severance died in Salisbury, Essex, MA. It is probably not of major importance this many years hence.

Not sure why but FAG has 18 June 1618 birth and 17 April 1658 death.

Find A Grave: Memorial #77612808 The book "Colonial Families of the United States of America, Vol. IV" page 314 says 17 June 1658. Also, only 6 of the Ursula Scott-Richard Kimball children are on the passenger list of the "Elizabeth". Abigail is not one of them and neither is John Severance.

Kimball-193 and Kimball-184 appear to represent the same person because: Let's try this again. This is NOT about Ursula Scott and Abigail Severence. This is about a non-existent daughter (of Ursula Scott) named Ursula, who needs to be merged away into daughter (of Ursula Scott) Abigail. Their death dates are the same.

Kimball-193 and Kimball-184 do not represent the same person because: Ursula Scott is well-known historically. She and Abigail Severance are clearly not the same person.

Kimball-193 and Kimball-184 appear to represent the same person because: There was no daughter Ursula. She's been confused with her sister Abigail. Their death dates are the same.
